Sauber pilot Zhou Guanuu has expressed his willingness to consider a return to Alpine in 2025, as he evaluates his options to secure his place in Formula 1. Zhou, whose current contract with Sauber is about to expire, is among the many drivers fighting for their future beyond the current season. Sauber’s decision to hire Nico Hulkenberg from Haas for 2025 means that either Zhou or his teammate Valtteri Bottas will have to give way. However, Sauber is also pursuing Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz as part of their transition plan to an Audi team starting in 2025. Zhou indicated that he would be open to staying at Sauber next season if the opportunity arises. However, given the uncertainty surrounding this possibility, Zhou sees reestablishing his connection with Alpine as a viable path to extending his career in the sport. When asked about the possibility of joining Alpine in 2025, Zhou stated, “I believe the other seat [at Sauber] is still available, so we have an option. I have always had a strong connection with Alpine in the past, as they played a crucial role in my journey to Formula 1. I am grateful for the opportunity I had with Alfa Romeo and Sauber. Now, I am open to other teams and discussions about my future. Nothing has been confirmed, but I believe there should be a place for me on the grid in the future, although I do not know where it will be.”
Zhou made it clear that he does not want to be a reserve driver or take a year off from Formula 1. He believes that taking a year off would make it difficult to return, as the sport is constantly evolving and the cars are always changing. Instead, Zhou’s goal is to secure a place for next year and continue his career in F1. Although he understands Sauber’s decision to hire Hulkenberg, he sees the midfield as an “unknown” with several drivers fighting for the remaining seats. Zhou remains hopeful that he will have the opportunity to prove his worth and secure a place for the next season.
